C'est dans un quartier pas très recommandable de New York, Hell's Kitchen, qu'est né Sylvester Enzio Stallone. C'était le 6 juillet 1946. Alors que ses camarades de classe l'élisent «garçon le plus susceptible de finir sur la chaise électrique» (aussi véridique que ridicule), il fait ses débuts d'acteur au lycée Devereux-Manor, dans la banlieue de Philadelphie. Décidé à poursuivre dans cette voie, il suit des cours de comédie à l'université de Miami, puis commence la tournée des agences de casting new-yorkaises. En 1974, il est engagé - aux côté d'Henry Winkler (alias Fonzie), Perry King et Susan Blakely - sur Les mains dans la poche. Son premier vrai rôle au cinéma, puisque l'on «oubliera» sa figuration dans Bananas, de Woody Allen, et ses galipettes anatomiques dans The Italian Stallion (traduisez "L'étalon italien"). Quittant la côte Est pour Hollywood, il tient ses premiers rôles à la télévision dans les séries "Kojak", "Baretta", "Police Story" et, entre deux apparitions sur grand écran (Adieu ma jolie, Capone, La course à la mort de l'an 2000, etc.) consacre l'essentiel de son temps à l'écriture. Un match spectaculaire entre Cassius Clay et et l'obscur boxeur Chuck Wepner lui inspire un jour le scénario de Rocky, une «success story» dans laquelle il investit tous ses espoirs. Plusieurs producteurs manifestent leur intérêt, mais souhaitent confier le rôle-titre à une vedette confirmée. Stallone, en dépit d'une situation financière précaire, leur tient tête et finit par avoir gain de cause : Rocky, tourné avec un budget restreint, triomphe au box-office, remporte l'Oscar 1976 du meilleur film, ainsi que onze nominations, dont deux pour son auteur-interprète. Alors qu'il poursuit sa carrière de boxeur à l'écran, Stallone crée un autre personnage, celui d'un vétéran du Vietnam : Rambo, sorti en 1982 (la même année que Rocky III) vaudra désormais à Sly d'être LE Monsieur action du cinéma. Deux opus plus tard et quelques tentatives - infructueuses pour la plupart - dans la comédie, Sylvester Stallone revient sur les écrans français, par l'intermédiaire de Cliffhanger et restera désormais viscéralement lié à son genre cinématographique de prédilection : l'action à gors budgets et effets conséquents. Copland, deJames Mangold, au plus petit budget, marque néanmoins une certaine volonté de rompre avec l'inflation des cachets et des moyens.
In 1998, Karine was approached by what is now known as the "Motion International" production company to co-host the once very popular children's science show in Quebec, "Les Petits Debrouillards" in an attempt to re-brand its "comeback" with a new, friendlier image. It was during her time on this show that she was spotted and hired by a producer Lorraine Richard and director Léa Pool to play the role of 'Hanna' in her first big break Set Me Free (1999), a film telling the story of a teenager trying to find her identity in a tormented family environment. The film was presented in 40 festivals, shown across 20 countries and earned two Oscar nominations for best foreign film. Her performance was highly acclaimed both nationally and internationally and earned her the title of best actress at the Gala of Jutra, in Quebec.
Karine then moved on to play Zac (Benoit Langlais)'s love interest in the controversial Quebec TV series: "2 frères" (1999). Her character, Lucie, became much more prominent and realistic in 2000-2001 and the debate stirred by the realistic and violent reality revealed led her to become, together with Langlais, a spokesperson for the government-funded TV program "Parler, c'est grandir", a broadcast aimed at youngsters from unstable backgrounds.
Her teen roles begun to stick and at the risk of becoming typecast she took on the main role for the feature film Games of the Heart (2001), a trendy production by Céline Baril on the intricacies of today's youngsters' love lives. In the spring of 2001, Karine applied for the ITHAKA program and took a six-month break in Greece to devote her time to travelling and academic work.
When she came back, Karine's career took a turn for the best when she chose a very different role from the usual rebellious teenagers we've know her so well for, that of the beautiful Donalda, in Charles Binamé's masterpiece, Séraphin: un homme et son péché (2002). Vanasse's perfomance shines through even though the cast is composed of the biggest names in Quebec's movie industry including Roy Dupuis (star of the cult series "La femme Nikita"), 20 years her senior, who plays Alexis Labranche, her forbidden lover.
Karine's acting career does not stop at TV and the Cinema, she has also appeared in various Theatrical productions both French and Canadian and she will soon join Elisha Cuthbert and Mia Kirshnerin in the Holywood stepladder by performing next to Charlize Theron and Penélope Cruz in John Duigan's 2004 production: Head in the Clouds (2004).
